How to Calculate the Dimensions and Volumetric Weight of Your Package

MMailPallet

Calculating the dimensions and weight of your package is crucial, as these factors significantly influence transportation costs, regardless of the delivery method. If you’re shipping packages via air freight, the cost is typically determined by the actual weight. However, in some cases, the package size may influence the pricing.

Volumetric Weight and When It Applies

Items like televisions or large appliances, such as fridge freezers, are sometimes classified as volumetric cargo. This classification means the shipping cost could be based on the volumetric weight rather than the actual weight. Understanding how to calculate this is essential.

Measuring Package Dimensions

To determine your package's dimensions, measure its length, width, and height in centimeters. Once you have these measurements, you can calculate the volumetric weight.

Calculating Volumetric Weight

Follow these steps to calculate the volumetric weight:

  1. Measure the length, width, and height of the package in centimeters.
  2. Multiply these three dimensions together to get the volume in cubic centimeters.
  3. Divide the total volume by 6,000 to calculate the volumetric weight.

By applying this formula, you can determine whether your package will be charged based on its volumetric weight.

Example Calculation:

Suppose a box weighs 32 kg and has dimensions of 130 cm (length) x 30 cm (width) x 90 cm (height). The volumetric weight calculation would be:

Volumetric Weight = (130 x 30 x 90) / 6,000 = 58.50 kg

In this example, since the volumetric weight (58.50 kg) is higher than the actual weight (32 kg), the shipping cost would be based on 58.50 kg.

Understanding and calculating volumetric weight can help you estimate and manage shipping expenses more effectively.
